Courtney Rockenbach,
assistant teacher
Courtney returned to the Quinn school in 2018 for her second stint as an assistant teacher. Originally enrolled as a student in 2003, she first taught from 2007-2012 before taking a break for graduate school. Currently, she teaches intro, beginner, and adult classes at the Kalamazoo studio and also assists with the skills class.

She said she really enjoys breaking down steps for students and helping them to finally "get" it.

"It's not always enough to tell someone to spring higher," she said. "Sometimes you have to tell them what parts of the foot they need to use to get that to happen. As a very late-start dancer, I think I learned the movements by analyzing them, and that helps me explain them to my students."

A preliminary championship dancer, Courtney has competed at the Mid-America Oireachtas multiple times and participated in countless performances. Her favorite performance experience, she said, was with Eileen Ivers at Miller Auditorium in Kalamazoo, where she also got to work with world champion Ashley Smith. Courtney currently is working toward becoming a TCRG.

Courtney earned a B.S. in zoology with high honor from Michigan State University in 2008 and a masters in biological science from the New Jersey Institute of Technology and Rutgers University in 2016. She currently is working on a Ph.D. in biological sciences from the New Jersey Institute of Technology and Rutgers University.
